Kid Rock’s Musical Career

He may have been born in 1971 as Robert James Ritchie, but it’s an indisputable truth that near-enough everyone outside of his immediate family knows him as Kid Rock. Though his initial work had something of a rap-rock slant to it, more recent offerings have seen Rock – who also dabbles in production and plays a number of instruments – venture over into country music; irrespective of style his music has enjoyed widespread commercial success and the RIAA accredits him with total sales of over 23.5 million albums. Critical success has also been a frequent presence across a career spanning 25 years, as Ritchie boasts an impressive 5 Grammy nominations to his name.

Although his first album was released back in 1990, it wasn’t until 1998 that Kid Rock first began to garner mainstream attention with the release of Devil Without A Cause. The album – hailed by AllMusic as a “rap-rock masterpiece” – has been certified 11 times platinum and remains Rock’s best-selling album thus far, having shifted more than 9 million units to date. Despite being only his first big success, DWAC was the last of Rock’s efforts to be classed as ‘hip-hop’, as 2001’s follow-up Cocky marked the beginning of the country-rock period. The change in aural sensibilities was not to his commercial detriment, as sales topped 5 million.

2003’s self-titled Kid Rock was next, and made Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 best albums that year. Any lingering rap-metal elements had their last hurrah on this record, which interestingly went with a cover as the lead single (Rock’s take on Feel Like Makin’ Love peaked at number 33). Four years later in 2007, Rock released Rock n Roll Jesus, an album perhaps best remembered for hit single All Summer Long, a radio favorite that resonated with many by drawing heavily on Sweet Home Alabama. Three further albums followed and although Rock has yet to match the airplay attained from that big single, Born Free (2010) brought another platinum certification, Rebel Soul (2012) was generally well-received critically, and 2015’s First Kiss (his first since leaving Atlantic) topped the rock album chart, with a subsequent Kid Rock tour scheduled for 2015.
